Contemporary Caprichos
At the end of the 18th century, Francisco Goya created one of the best-known bodies of print works Los Caprichos. This series spans 80 different etching, each acting to lampoon, satirize, and pillory various institutions, individuals, practices, or commonly held beliefs of his times. These prints have long fascinated artists and prompted several of them to re-interpret Goya’s Los Caprichos with regard to their contemporary world. For this assignment, students chose one of Goya’s originals to research and re-purpose for the contemporary moment. They were encouraged to think satire, and feel free to take aim at prominent figures in our society or social customs. These prints were made using line etching/drypoint/aquatint on copper. The final prints are on 10” x 8” Rives BFK.
