Positive/Negative Space

For this assignment students were tasked with creating a drawing focused on exploring shape through positive and negative space. To do this, students were instructed to build a still life set-up at home featuring at least three objects interacting with each other, with an emphasis on objects that have a lot of gaps built into them naturally (e.g. chair, bicycles, leafy plants, tangled cords, milk crates, etc..). After taking a variety of photographs from different angles and perspectives to create an image to base the composition off of, they utilized an entire 11 “x 14” sheet Bristol paper and India ink to create these high contrast, shape forward pieces.
